No smoking day is observed every year on the second Wednesday of March to encourage smokers to quit smoking. The main purpose of this day is to spread awareness among smokers about the risks and harmful effects of smoking. According to the World Health Organization, 12% of the world’s smokers are Indians.

Smoking or chewing tobacco is considered as a bad health habit. This habit can be acquired by any age group, but it is especially common in youth. Some may start it due to curiosity while some may start due to peer pressure. Slowly, it turns into an addiction. People are very well aware of the risks and consequences of smoking.

The effect of smoking begins with coughing and throat irritation followed by bad breath. Over time, many severe conditions may be developed such as heart disease, bronchitis, stroke or various types of cancers.

Health Risks From Smoking:

1. Heart – Smoking damages the heart and blood circulation, increasing the risk of developing consequences such as:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Cerebrovascular disease

2. Lungs – Smoking causes harm to the lungs by increasing the risk of :

  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
  • Bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Pneumonia

Smoking can also worsen the symptoms of respiratory conditions such as common cold, asthma, and respiratory tract infections.

3. Fertility Problem – Smoking cigarettes can damage female reproductive systems, causing complications in pregnancy. This is because tobacco and chemicals present in cigarettes affect the hormonal levels.

In males, regular smoking may cause erectile dysfunction. Smoking can also affect the quality of sperm and reduces fertility.

4. Pregnancy Complications – Smoking during pregnancy can put the unborn baby’s health at risk.

  • Miscarriage
  • Premature birth
  • Stillbirth

5. Risk of Type 2 Diabetes – Smoking makes it difficult for people with type 2 diabetes to maintain their condition and causes further health risks.

6. Vision Problem – Smoking cigarettes can cause eye problems and increases the risk of developing:

  • Cataracts
  • Dry eyes
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma

7. Poor Oral Hygiene – People who smoke have poor gum health compared to those who don’t smoke. Symptoms of gum disease include swollen and tender gums, bleeding while brushing, yellowing of teeth, bad breath, etc.

8. Cancer – In addition to the well-known link with lung cancer, smoking also contributes to other forms of cancers such as mouth, laryngeal, throat, oesophagus, liver, colon cancer.

The harmful effects of smoking does not only affect the people who smoke but also affects the health of family members, friends, co-workers and people around the smokers. When someone smokes a cigarette, some amount of smoke goes into the air. Anyone nearby can breathe it.
