Migraine Headache: Causes, Symptoms, Migraine Treatment & Home Remedies


Migraine is a neurological condition that can cause serious throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation inside the head region. Migraine is a type of headache which is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity towards light and sound. Migraine pain can last for hours to days, and the pain can be so severe that it may interrupt with daily activities.

For few people, a warning symptom (known as an aura) occurs before or with a headache. An aura includes visual disturbances, such as flashes of light or blind spots, prickling on either side of the face or in the arm or leg, and difficulty in speaking.

Causes of Migraine

Migraine pain is caused by the unusual activity of the brain. This activity can be triggered by many factors. Most researchers suggest that the attack starts in the brain and involves nerve pathways and chemicals. The changes affect blood flow in the brain and the surrounding tissues.

Migraine attacks may be triggered by the following:

  • Drinks – these include alcohol, caffeine,
  • Hormonal Changes in Women – many women experience migraine attacks before or during menstrual periods, pregnancy, or menopause due to fluctuations in estrogen levels.

  • Emotional Triggers – such as stress, depression, anxiety, shock, and excitement may trigger a migraine.

  • Physical Factors – intense physical exertion, poor posture, tiredness, and inadequate sleep are factors that may trigger a migraine.

  • Sensory Stimulus – bright lights and sun glare, high pitch sound, strong smells can trigger migraines.

  • Food and Food Additives – cheese, chocolates, salty, and processed foods might activate the migraine attack. Many food additives such as sweetener aspartame, tyramine are triggering factors for migraines.

Symptoms of Migraine

Migraines, which tend to begin in childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood, can progress through four stages: prodrome, aura, attack, and post-drome. Though it is not necessary that everyone who suffers migraines goes through all stages.

1. Prodrome

Just one or two days before a migraine, an individual might feel subtle changes that can be a warning sign for upcoming migraine, including:

  • Mood changes
  • Food cravings
  • Constipation
  • Neck stiffness
  • Frequent yawning
  • Frequent thirst and urination

2. Aura

Auras are reversible symptoms related to the nervous system. They are usually visual, and can also include other disturbances cueing the person that a headache may be soon to come.
Examples include:

  • Visual phenomena, such as seeing bright spots or flashlight
  • Loss of vision
  • Hearing noise or music
  • Speech problem
  • Prickling sensation in arm or leg
  • Numbness

3. Attack

A migraine usually lasts for 5 to 72 hours if left untreated. Migraine occurring varies from person to person. It can be rare or can strike several times a month.

During a migraine, an individual might experience:

  • Pain usually on one side or both sides of the head
  • Throbbing or pulsing pain
  • Sensitivity to sound, light, smell, and touch
  • Nausea and vomiting

4. Post-drome

After a migraine attack, an individual might feel drained or confused for some time. Some people experience feeling elated. A sudden movement in the head might be painful.

Migraine Risk Factors

Various factors make an individual more prone to a migraine attack. These include:

  • Family History – A person with a family history of migraine may have a chance of developing a migraine too.

  • Age – Migraine can begin with any age group, though the first attack often occurs during adolescence. It tends to peak during the 30s.

  • Hormonal Changes – Women having a migraine headache might begin before or shortly after the onset of menstruation. Migraines usually improve after menopause.

Lifestyle and Home Remedies for Migraine

When symptoms of migraine begin, try to stay in a quiet, darkened room. Try to rest or take a nap. Place a cool piece of cloth or ice pack on the forehead or at the back of the neck.
Other remedies/ measures include:

    • Relaxation Techniques – Relaxation training teach ways to deal with stressful situations, which might help reduce the number of migraines or migraine pain.

    • Develop a Proper Sleeping and Healthy Eating Routine – Adequate sleep is a necessity. Don’t sleep too much or too little. Set and follow a consistent schedule daily. Try to eat meals at a fixed time every day.

    • Drink Plenty of Fluids – Staying hydrated, especially with water, might help in reducing the attack of migraine.

    • Maintain a Headache Diary – Record your headache diary even after seeing a doctor. It will help in learning more about trigger factors and effective treatments.

    • Exercise or Yoga Regularly – Yoga and routinely aerobic exercise reduces stress and can help prevent migraines. Choose an aerobic activity you enjoy, such as walking, swimming, and cycling. Warm-up slowly, because sudden and intense exercise can cause headaches.
