About Prostate Cancer, Symptoms and Treatment of Prostate Cancer?

PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate Cancer: A ‘serial killer’.

Prostate cancer is the 3rd, and final, disorder of the pancreas. The fifth most common type of cancer in the world today, prostate cancer tends to occur in men who are above a certain age. This age can start at 45, although over 75% of recorded cases have happened to men who are past 65. According to available data, prostate cancer is the second most frequently occurring cancer in men in the world. Every year, the disease claims over 4 million lives – and this number is growing fast. Prostate cancer is also the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths in men, and by 2020, it is expected to experience the highest proportionate rise amongst all cancer cases.

What are the Symptoms and Treatment of Prostate Cancer?

While there are no clinically proven methods for preventing prostate cancer, a smart diet can be beneficial. Food groups to include in your diet include fruits and vegetables (especially tomatoes and red foods), soyabean, tofu, lentil, chickpea, peanuts, whole grains, fortified cereals, fish (such as sardines, tuna, mackerel, trout, salmon and others containing Omega 3) and olive oil (instead of butter). Make wise food choices, keep red meat and dairy intake low and get regular exercise.

Opinion is divided on whether a healthy individual should screen or test for prostate cancer. Some doctors and organizations recommend a perfunctory testing in men who are above 50, or possess risk factors for prostate cancer.

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

In cases where there are tell-tale symptoms, tests will be compulsory. Some examples of symptoms are:

  • Difficulty during urination
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Frequent compulsions to urinate at night
  • Presence of blood in the urine, blood or semen
  • Ache and uneasiness in the pelvic or rectal regions
  • Difficulty and pain during erection or ejaculation

When prostate cancer spreads, it can lead to the formation of tumors in the body’s organs and bones, or put pressure on spinal nerves. In such situations, symptoms can range from swelling in the pelvic and leg area to loss of sensation (numbness) in legs and hips or consistent pain in the bones, which can even result in fractures.

If initial tests for prostate cancer indicate any kind of anomaly or abnormality, the supervising physician may recommend further tests. If the cancer is diagnosed as low-risk, or if the patient has other medical complications going on parallely, active surveillance – instead of immediate action – may be the wise way forward. In more extreme cases, solutions are surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemo therapy and other treatments.

PROSTATE TESTS

1. Free PSA

This test is generally useful in the detection of prostate cancer. A free PSA test measures the quantity of PSA that is floating freely in the blood stream, without being bound to a different protein.

2. Total PSA

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by normal, as well as malignant cells of the prostate gland (in Male). The Total PSA test measures the level of PSA in a man’s blood.

A man may have an increased risk of prostate cancer when they have lower levels of free PSA and higher levels of total PSA.

3. CE MRI Prostate

CE MRI (Contrast Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Scan for Prostate is also called Mp Mri. This MRI technology is a PSA-based prostate cancer screening to improve diagnosis and management.

4. PSMA

PSMA PET-CT imaging with prostate-specific membrane antigen helps in the early detection, staging and follow up for prostate cancer.
